Racing to Retirement

Is there enough gas in your retirement tank to cross the finish line?

Are you still running in the race to retirement? Is your retirement still on track? Or do you need a pit stop to check your strategy and retirement vehicle’s functioning?

Think of retirement like the Indy 500 race: You are the driver, the star of the show. The ultimate goal is to get across the retirement finish line. Your car is your retirement plan—you need a good car to begin with but also maintenance and corrections to keep you in the race. Plus, a top pit crew—your team of financial planners, financial advisors, CPAs, and/or lawyers—is a must-have for a winning race car driver. We’re here to deliver strategies for retirement —just like a pit stop is required to change the tires, add gas, and make winning adjustments—to get you back on the track as quickly as possible and across the finish line.

Racing, much like retirement, is a game of anticipating what may come in the future, much of which is unanticipated. Throughout a 500-mile race, the strategy evolves frequently, and the elements affecting performance are numerous and diverse: pit stops, cautions, driver feel, tire performance and degradation, weather and racetrack conditions, fuel and mileage, engine revving, and track position. The strategists funnel all factors into strategic decisions, then communicates them to you, the driver of your retirement. This flow of decisions, particularly under the caution flag, can put you in position to win or take you out of the race. Excessive chatter in your ear and emotions in this race are not just distractions—they can be dangerous to your retirement future.

The race is won almost equally by the timing of pit stops, management of fuel and tires, and strategy under the yellow as it is by raw speed, car performance, and outstanding execution and adjustments. Neither a driver nor the strategists can execute a perfect plan—there are too many unknown, in-the-moment factors that influence the race’s outcome—but preparation from the start can put them in the best place to have a shot to win the race.
